Cassette Tape Collection: Strawberry Switchblade

This is not the first time I have mentioned " Strawberry Switchblade " on this blog , as well featuring their music videos. But they remain a huge part of my memory impressions of the 80s, with music genre veering towards synth-imaginary limbo-dreams of Scritti Politti, Dream Academy et al - and an opposition to the explosions of Depeche Mode et al. And who can't love the name " Strawberry Switchblade "? LOL WHO-IS: "Strawberry Switchblade was a female pop rock band formed in Scotland in 1981 by Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall, best known for their song "Since Yesterday" in 1985." [ Wiki ] And as well their choice of performance-wear and identity was the single most unique of that era, imbedded in my memory, which as well first introduced the concept of Lolita-wear over 2 decades ago - which now still remains as strong within the cosplay-culture, I reckon. The Substation Flea Market (circa early-90s)

Snaps from the Sunday Flea Market, at The Substation in Armenia Street, circa early to mid-90s, mostly of my own table, and some others (all posted below ;p). I progressed from a single table selling trading cards, to renting two tables whenever I held a comicbook sale (for which I advertised in the classifieds section of the weekend newspaper! Rental per Sunday included a foldable (formica top) table - with a hole drilled in the middle, a large umbrella to fit thru the hole - anchored to a cement-base, and two stools. All for SGD$5. THAT's how long ago it was hahahahaha At one period, even my younger sister was working for The Substation, taking care of the flea market. I would remember coming in earlier and helping her sweep the grounds off the fallen leaves, before folks come in to set up their tables. A sense of indie-DIY was strong then, unlike the commercial appeal these days. But then again, sales were not great decades back, as folks perhaps struggled with the noti

"Let It Be" Songbooks of the 80s & The Lyrics of Lost Times

I had a conversation the other week (with fellow geekaloid Si Ling at rehab), about the lack of "lyrics-appreciation" (or sumach banality) in songs and the scene these days. I remember in the mid-to-late-80s, where there existed song lyrics collected and printed in entire telephone-book thick tomes of books. Sing titles ranged around song-titles from then-pop titles to old school classics like the Beatles' "Let It Be" - which I suspected were for guitarists or musicians, who needed to refer to song-lyrics in their performances, or practices (Milli Vanilli might have missed out on this book). And we gathered groups to sing from it! Like a practicing "band", we would sing along to the lyrics in the book - and while we were hardly what-you-would-call a true-blue bebop or harmony-band (aka we suck lol), it felt as if we were truly part of a band, like the ones we listened to on the radio and on cassettes! Mind you, this was a decade or so before "

music memories: scritti politti

(Wood Beez - Pray Like Aretha Franklin / 1984) im not 100%-concrete, but i reckon Wood Beez may be the first time i heard Scritti Politti , yet another scramble recording it on my Panda-cassette/radio [ remember ?]. i remember the name of the band, becoz i could hear what the DJ's were mumbling (or perhaps it was the muffled mono-speaker LOL) and that i could comprehend "scritti politti" as a band-name (nowadays everything's either mono-sibylic or literally-irreverent. heh). and i remembered the trippy-synth melody being something that was unique during that fortuitous era of music. (Absolute / 1984) the melodies were always lovely and catchy. and what stuck me the most were the hard heavy-ish beats, during a time where synth-manipulation was de rigueur and where the beats came fast and lite. and the mashup of different musical genres and cultural-influences were fresh and done with a touch of class (IMHO) as compared to the schtick-shock of other synth-outfits

music memories: kajagoogoo's too shy

the smell of fresh pandan cake, a single slice with a bite out of it, lime-green crumbles on a white porcelain plate lay silently contented beside me ... the intense feeling of comfort, of lying chest down on a mattress on the floor of my bedroom on a breezy saturday afternoon, while flipping thru a newly purchased second-hand issue of Captain Carrot and The Amazing Zoo Crew ( wiki ) ... this intense, vivid memory and collection of sensations always washes over me whenever i hear Kajagoogoo 's Too Shy (1983). thinking back, it wasn't a particular period of my secondary school life that i'd remember to have warranted such an inexplicable and fresh feeling, even til now ... nor the circumstance prior and after this inner time-capsuled memory (for i've forgotten totally about them LOL) to have triggered anything ... or maybe it has everything to do with my insecurities as a pimply teen? ... or perhaps i can only surmise was the comfort of being left alone, to slowly
