TRE-Retro80s-Thursday (Mar 4.2010)

The month of March will see 3 songs by 3 artists/groups per Retro80s-Thursday-Tweet! (http://twitter.com/toysrevil) This week's selection features Eurythmics, Art of Noise and Frankie Goes To Hollywood!

Eurythmics were a British musical duo, formed in 1980 by Scottish front woman Annie Lennox and English musician Dave Stewart. [wiki]. Quite an iconic front-woman of the 80s, I would say, without much pomp and glitz, but always stately glam-punk'd and in your face, without the frilly-dos and ribbons during that era. Always and still is a good listen, IMHO.

Art of Noise (also The Art of Noise) were an avant-garde synthpop group formed in 1983 by engineer/producer Gary Langan, programmer JJ Jeczalik, along with arranger Anne Dudley, producer Trevor Horn and music journalist Paul Morley. The group's mostly instrumental compositions were novel melodic sound collages based on digital sampler technology, which was new at the time. Inspired by turn-of-the-century revolutions in music, the Art of Noise were initially packaged as a faceless anti- or non-group, blurring the distinction between the art and its creators. The band is noted for innovative use of electronics and computers in pop music and particularly for innovative use of sampling. [wiki]

~ No doubt a mouthful, but in reality the text description is to compensate for the lack of general visual representation by the artists in the group. But the music speaks for itself, decades later ... although admittedly a tad dated, but nevertheless iconic to the electronica-era :)

[Relax (Don't Do It) = this is the "sanitized" version
/ "banned" version on youtube *NSFW*]

Frankie Goes to Hollywood (FGTH) were an English dance-pop band that was extremely popular in the mid-1980s [wiki] ~ while being utterly famous for their banned "Relax" video, and provocative "Two Tribes" message, it may well have overshadowed the band's music, specifically the other tracks in their "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" album. A pity really. Lead singer Holly Johnson went on with his solo career, while the band dissipated like many other bands in the 80s, while their songs linger and echo thru the airwaves still ...

/// San Jose (The Way) by Frankie Goes To Hollywood ~ ♫ http://blip.fm/~m5rs6
/// Born To Run by Frankie Goes To Hollywood ~ ♫ http://blip.fm/~m5roz

One of the best looking record-covers in the 80s, IMHO ~ which also helped the notion of FGTH as a fashion-forward band, including the inane popularity of their "Frankie Say Relax" motto ~ which were one of the main "culprits" which started the trend of big-lettered tees LOL.
