ADDED 12.10.08: Due to overwhelming request (more than 1 request is overwhelming for this particular blog L:OL) - I have actually found Tokyo Square's "Within You'll Remain"! remember this? (not actual video) i can imagine the grimace on some folks faces, as they recognize the opening melody, especially us "slightly mature adults" (*cough*) ... the young'uns would probably go: *huh? WTF?* local-Singaporean band Tokyo Square 's Within You'll Remain has to be one of the most enduring (if not endearing) local songs of the 80's - and as prolific as a local pop-song, and i would dare say even "iconic", IMHO. admittedly, we never really gave it it's due and respect back then, most times belittling it because it had used oriental/chinese songs/tunes as influences. we labeled it "obiang" or "or-bit" (ie: backward and tasteless) because of that musical-mashup. and as the butt of jokes it's popularity m...

The Sunday Flea Market @ Clarke Quay (circa early-2000s)

Snaps from the Sunday Flea Market, at Clarke Quay, around early-to-mid 2000, before it got turned into the (wannabe) posh nightlife and food venue it is now. Every application was held Tuesday evening, where you are either drawn to display your wares indoors (two stories, with air conditioning), or outdoors, facing the streets, lined thru to the Satay Club, to the back where nobody goes to except kidswho bug their parents to hahahaha I am sure I took plenty of photographs (all printed, none digital), but alas all I am left with now, are low-res scans of that one table that one time I got drawn for an indoor table (2nd floor, no less hahaha). Will update more pics if I can find them :p

Cassette Tape Collection: Strawberry Switchblade

This is not the first time I have mentioned " Strawberry Switchblade " on this blog , as well featuring their music videos. But they remain a huge part of my memory impressions of the 80s, with music genre veering towards synth-imaginary limbo-dreams of Scritti Politti, Dream Academy et al - and an opposition to the explosions of Depeche Mode et al. And who can't love the name " Strawberry Switchblade "? LOL WHO-IS: "Strawberry Switchblade was a female pop rock band formed in Scotland in 1981 by Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall, best known for their song "Since Yesterday" in 1985." [ Wiki ] And as well their choice of performance-wear and identity was the single most unique of that era, imbedded in my memory, which as well first introduced the concept of Lolita-wear over 2 decades ago - which now still remains as strong within the cosplay-culture, I reckon. Cassette Tape Collection

I grew up on "cassette tapes", particularly in the 80s. From bootlegged "chrome"-tapes to off the shelf goodness - I pretty much spent my 80s being musically-educated by the West (3-for-SGD$5 bootlegs are the best, as I could sample and try out more obscure bands!), as well as a smattering of Canto-tapes (which has since mysteriously disappeared from whatever little collection I had left, yes, even my Alan Tam tape is missing *cough*) via cassette tape collections. Even with the advent of vinyl albums - it did not really catch on with me (my brother instead got bit and hard lol), my sentimental heart remained still with tapes. I had accepted the reality of Compact Discs a little later than I should, which sort of worked out well as by then the albums and bands from the cassette generation had become "classics" or "retro", collections were plentiful and even cheaper than the new ones - so I could "upgrade" and not feel the pitch. "The New Romantics: A Fine Romance" is a 2001 feature documentary, which takes a look at the movement born from the London club scene at the beginning of the 80s. IMDb lists Sharon Walker as the director, with voice over narration by Magenta Devine. I've attempted to screengrab the cast credits, which essentially showcases the bands whom appeared in the 45-minuter (also music listed here ), all of whom are familiar names to my Soundtrack To Life ( FLASHBACK WITH ME ON TUNESTALKSG ), growing up, although you might argue I am still living in the 80s, and I will not deny that accusation, cheers.
