ABOUT

And while my mind and heart lives in the spirit of the 80s, I have begun to archive the 90s and beyond, because memories are worth remembering, preserving and archiving.

Cheers
Andy.

POPULAR MEMORIES

within you'll remain: an iconic pop song of the 80's

ADDED 12.10.08: Due to overwhelming request (more than 1 request is overwhelming for this particular blog L:OL) - I have actually found Tokyo Square's "Within You'll Remain"! remember this? (not actual video) i can imagine the grimace on some folks faces, as they recognize the opening melody, especially us "slightly mature adults" (*cough*) ... the young'uns would probably go: *huh? WTF?* local-Singaporean band Tokyo Square 's Within You'll Remain has to be one of the most enduring (if not endearing) local songs of the 80's - and as prolific as a local pop-song, and i would dare say even "iconic", IMHO. admittedly, we never really gave it it's due and respect back then, most times belittling it because it had used oriental/chinese songs/tunes as influences. we labeled it "obiang" or "or-bit" (ie: backward and tasteless) because of that musical-mashup. and as the butt of jokes it's popularity m...

The Sunday Flea Market @ Clarke Quay (circa early-2000s)

Snaps from the Sunday Flea Market, at Clarke Quay, around early-to-mid 2000, before it got turned into the (wannabe) posh nightlife and food venue it is now. Every application was held Tuesday evening, where you are either drawn to display your wares indoors (two stories, with air conditioning), or outdoors, facing the streets, lined thru to the Satay Club, to the back where nobody goes to except kidswho bug their parents to hahahaha I am sure I took plenty of photographs (all printed, none digital), but alas all I am left with now, are low-res scans of that one table that one time I got drawn for an indoor table (2nd floor, no less hahaha). Will update more pics if I can find them :p

"Let It Be" Songbooks of the 80s & The Lyrics of Lost Times

I had a conversation the other week (with fellow geekaloid Si Ling at rehab), about the lack of "lyrics-appreciation" (or sumach banality) in songs and the scene these days. I remember in the mid-to-late-80s, where there existed song lyrics collected and printed in entire telephone-book thick tomes of books. Sing titles ranged around song-titles from then-pop titles to old school classics like the Beatles' "Let It Be" - which I suspected were for guitarists or musicians, who needed to refer to song-lyrics in their performances, or practices (Milli Vanilli might have missed out on this book). And we gathered groups to sing from it! Like a practicing "band", we would sing along to the lyrics in the book - and while we were hardly what-you-would-call a true-blue bebop or harmony-band (aka we suck lol), it felt as if we were truly part of a band, like the ones we listened to on the radio and on cassettes! Mind you, this was a decade or so before ...

black man ray / wishful thinking by china crisis

[Black Man Ray by China Crisis] One of the more distinctive tunes of the '80s (for me anyways) was China Crisis' BLACK MAN RAY. Besides it's mellowness - which was pretty different from the other edgy-angst-electronica during that period (IMHO) - it was the opening riff (if that be called a "riff", a music-man I am not :p) - which sounded quite like an Oriental-tune, dunnit? Which somehow reminded me of "Within You'll Remain" from Tokyo Square, and it's ilk. The first ever song I'd heard from China Crisis was actually WISHFUL THINKING - via a mixtape I'd "ordered" from a record shop in Coronation Plaza (also my first "Magnetic Tape" LOL) - it was a random tune the fella dropped into the tape. Which worked out great for me, becoz I got to listen to and know about a new song, innit? (Of coz back then - first thought was he ripped me off my own song request list!) "Wishful Thinking" is yet another iconic (to me)...

My Top Ten 80s Songs (Vol.1) To The #SoundtrackofMyLife

This list started out as a "request" I had asked a friend, to share her 90s' songlist with me, which in turn had gotten me intrigued on songs which "instinctively reminded me of the 80s" once I heard it, and of course I had come out with a decent stack of mixtape suggestions! So, instead of choosing my own "Top Ten Favourites", I'd offer instead different "volumes" of tunes from the 80s that are dear to me and my Soundtrack of Life! " Too Shy " by Kajagoogoo (1983 / Album: White Feathers) instinctively contours up a vivd memory of a certain afternoon, as I am laying front down on the floor, on a mattress, as I am writing into an "autograph book" of a classmate (maybe I had a crush on her?), while beside laid a plate with a couple of slices of pandan cake. This was in Teban Garden's flat, when I was more likely in Secondary 3, or 4, or repeating my Sec 4. Crips memory too. I do not have a very distinct me...
